Dear Memberes of the LBS Geopolitics and Business Society,
The LBS Geopolitics & Business Society has been fairly busy in the month of November. THREE highly engaging and insightful events were organised by the society to bring diverse opinions about current affairs and state affairs.
We first hosted Dr Tomohiko TANIGUCHI, former foreign policy speech writer of Japan's late Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, on 15th November to discuss some of the fundamental issues influencing the Japanese politico-economic system today and in the immediate future. Over 100 attendees from within and without LBS had a rare insider's look of the internal policy making process of the Japanese government. Issues such as Japan's aging population and "The Tyranny of Proximity" faced by the country triggered the most interests from the audience. The discussion was co-hosted by The Japan Society and moderated by Mr. Bill Emmott, ex Editor-in-Chief of The Economist. The evening ended on a high note with a sake-filled networking reception with the speaker and moderator.
Then on 27th November, the Society organised the first moderated-discussion to promote understanding and reduce misconceptions between different LBS communities. Concerning competition in an age of interdependence, participants from different geographies such as Taiwan, Mainland China, Japan, South Korea, Australia, U.S., and Brazil shared insights and personal observations on the impact and importance of U.S.-China relationship can exert on the global community.
Just a day later, on 28th November, the Society was honoured to host Rt Hon Charles Hendry, former UK Minister of State for Energy at the Department for Energy & Climate Change to unravel the ways in which geopolitical factors can impact discussions at COP28 and also examine the intricate relationship between Geopolitics and Energy Security. Mr Hendry candidly shared his take-away as a veteran politician in the UK, his views on the future interactions between energy security and geopolitics, and his suggestions and aspirations for the role of UK in the global future of sustainability. To top the evening off, senior members of the Society had the chance to engage further conversations with Mr Hendry over a society-hosted dinner.
