As corporate sustainability and responsibility increases in importance across industries, so too does the need for companies to publicly communicate initiatives and outcomes in a clear and compelling way. But the way in which sustainability is reported can vary dramatically across companies – making it difficult to produce and to interpret. Fortunately, there is significant work underway to align how companies report on these efforts, making it easier for operators and investors alike to get the true picture. We will be exploring this growing practice and seeking to simplify the complex landscape of ESG reporting, to help equip those interested both in ESG investing and in advising/managing underlying business practices.

The SIC is delighted that Professor Ioannis Ioannou, Associate Professor of Strategy and Entrepreneurship, will host this panel with two hands-on players in the ESG reporting space - Richard Howitt (former CEO of the International Integrated Reporting Council) and Susanne Stormer (former VP Corporate Sustainability of Novo Nordisk). We will touch on topics such as:

1. In the universe of ESG reporting, who are the key bodies and stakeholders, what standards exist, and how arre they being hamonised?
2. What role does ESG reporting play for investors and managers?
3. What is the future of ESG reporting?

Dr Ioannis Ioannou Ioannis is an Associate Professor of Strategy and Entrepreneurship at London Business School. He graduated magna cum laude from Yale University, majoring in Economics and Mathematics and holds a Ph.D. in Business Economics from Harvard University and the Harvard Business School. As a Strategy scholar, Ioannis' research focuses on Sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility. More specifically, through his academic publications, teaching engagements, and advisory roles, he seeks to explore whether, how, and the extent to which companies and capital markets can lead on the path towards a sustainable and responsible future. Ioannis is currently serving as an Associate Editor of the Strategic Management Journal. He is also a member of the ESG Advisory Board of the DWS Group, one of Europe's largest asset managers, and a member of the World Economic Forum Expert Network with expertise in the area of Sustainable Development.

Richard Howitt is the former head of the Integrated International Reporting Council. He was a Harlow District Council member for many years before being elected to the European Parliament. As lead-MEP on corporate responsibility, he represented the EU internationally and was pivotal in drawing up the EU’s non-financial information directive, one of the world’s biggest transformations in corporate disclosure. Richard Howitt has been involved in the evolution of Integrated Reporting from the start. He was a member of HRH The Prince of Wales Annual Forum on Accounting for Sustainability which led to the foundation of the IIRC.

Susanne Stormer led Novo Nordisk’s efforts to be a sustainable business and is charged with oversight of corporate sustainability-driven programmes, the integrated Annual Report, stakeholder engagements and communication on the value of the company’s Triple Bottom Line (TBL) business principle. In this capacity she set the strategic direction for the company’s positioning as a sustainability leader and a pioneer in demonstrating the long-term business value of incorporating economic, social and environmental perspectives into its market proposition.
