Details
This workshop introduces students to the fundamental constructs and syntax of Python. During the series, the instructor will demonstrate how to write basic code with a view to building students’ programming skills.
Content
We walk through data structures following which we examine how to use files and packages. The focus will then shift from programming syntax and functions towards their application in the analysis of data. Information extracted from data depends on the method of analysis chosen. Further, the way a specific analytic method is implemented (e.g. model built to analyse the data) depends on what the data is and what it yields on examination. Hence an analysis of a given data set needs to be built sequentially, the objective of each step being justified by the findings of the previous step and taking them forward to achieve the overall objective of the workbook.
In order to prepare students to use professional methods of analysis, we will practise with different workbooks which cover a variety of data from different sectors, using a range of basic statistical and other mathematical methods. These workbooks will guide students through step-by-step analyses in order to address typical but, broad in nature, requests from management. Students would be required to fill in the required code, and interact with the instructor(s) to deepen their understanding of the choices made during coding.
