Let’s face it. Most of us would like to be as kickass in a meeting room as such fictional bosses as Miranda Priestly or Don Draper.

Many believe the confidence, quick-thinking, and persuasion needed to fit the bill are traits you either have or you don't. But, embracing the LBS’s growth mindset, you know that these are not innate abilities, but skills to be developed like any other!

We've found that debate is the perfect training ground for building the skills you'll need to be successful in a variety of business settings (e.g. meetings, board rooms, presentations, pitches), so we've put together a professionally-taught workshop series to give you the best crash course in business-relevant debating skills.

The 8 sessions will run each Thursday staring 24 September at 7pm (excluding reading week).

Over 8 weeks, you will learn the foundations of British Parliamentary debate as well as how to build arguments under pressure, public speaking skills, and how to critically analyse arguments presented to you.

There will be a chance to compete either as a speaking team or as a judge in a range of Inter-University debating competitions, with additional practices and support for teams that take part.

You don’t need to be interested in competing to come along to sessions – everyone will have the chance to learn and practice debating in our weekly debates.

Coach:

Heather Robinson has over ten years experience of competing in and coaching debating and public speaking. She has reached the Finals and Semi-Finals of numerous UK debating competitions, including at the Universities of Oxford, the New College of Humanities, University College London (UCL), Newcastle, and the London Business School’s 2019 World Open Debate Championship, at which she was ranked the Second Best Speaker.

Heather has provided debate and public speaking training workshops for King's College London (KCL), the London Business School, and several schools across the UK. Earlier this year she was the lead coach on a debate tour of schools in Kolkata and Patna, India and she has been working with Debate Camp Canada as they move their in person debate training online.

Heather now uses her public speaking experience to run workshops on Consent in schools and universities.

Additional coach:

Heather will be joined by Jordan Anderson, SOAS & KCL graduate, winner of 21 UK and international debating competitions, and semi-finalist of the World University Debating Championship. Over the past decade he has trained hundreds of corporations and business school students in the art of “owning a boardroom” through debate training. When not teaching, Jordan also works as a political risk analyst, focusing on sub-Saharan Africa.

We are pleased to offer this professional 8-session workshop series to you, our members, at a deeply subsidized price of only £45.

Each session (running on Thursday evenings) will be 2 hours and offer instruction, hands-on practice, and personalized feedback.
