CONTENT
After initiating students into working with Jupyter workbook sessions, the content addresses introductory steps and concepts in programming before moving on to data structures that are specific to Python.
Exercises and workbooks are included to help students practise the features taught so that they internalise their use and application. An overview of the two most popular Python packages will also be presented. These are designed to explain how to use Python in data analysis.
Day 1:
• Introduction to Python
• Conditional Decision making and its automation
• Data Structures (I) – Strings, Lists, and Tuples
• Exercises + Q&A for each of the above
Day 2:
• Data structures (II)
o Sets – Characteristics & Properties, Operators, Functions & Methods
o Dictionaries - Characteristics & Properties, Operators, Functions & Methods
o Different methods of creating dictionaries, adding & iterating through dictionaries
• Functions and File Handling
• What are Packages? – Loading packages – Introduction to popular packages
• Exercises + Q&A for each of the above
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
By the end of the workshop, attendees should feel more comfortable with:
• Add documentation to programs
• Running and modify programs written by others
• Write basic programs in Python by -
o Using loops and fundamental data structures
o Using own functions
o Interacting with numeric and textual data stored in simple formats
o Using packages
• Analyse given data to extract results and insights from
o Purely numeric datasets
o Mixed (numeric and textual) datasets
• Critique and design simple workbooks for programmers to work on
