Paul Clarke - Guest Speaker Bio
Paul Clarke is Chief Technology Officer at Ocado, the world's largest online-only grocery retailer. After joining Ocado in 2006, Paul initially worked on warehouse control systems and then joined the team designing Ocado’s next highly automated fulfilment centre. After establishing new teams for Simulation and Mobile development, Paul then co-wrote the first of Ocado’s award winning mobile apps which remain the only apps from a major retailer supporting full offline shopping. In his current role, Paul heads up Ocado Technology, whose 950+ software engineers and other IT specialists are responsible for building all the software and IT infrastructure that powers Ocado, and now Morrisons’ online grocery business too. Ocado are in the midst of re-platforming their complete solution to create the Ocado Smart Platform (OSP) - a combination of scalable modular hardware for building automated warehouses and their end to end e-commerce and fulfilment solution running in the cloud. They will use OSP to offer large bricks & mortar grocery retailers around the world a shortcut to moving online using Ocado's disruptive business model.
Abstract: Ocado already has the most automated and sophisticated solution for online grocery retail in the world. This talk will focus on the future of this industry and how Ocado is harnessing the power of four technology tsunamis (artificial intelligence, big data, swarm robotics and the Internet of Things) to leapfrog itself and build a revolutionary new e-commerce, fulfilment and logistics platform to put large bricks and mortar grocery retailers around the world online using its unique business model. But the story of Ocado's scalable and sustainable disruptive innovation does not end there...
Education/Prior Work Experience
Paul read Physics at Oxford University before then entering the computer industry. He has worked in software engineering, consultancy, interim management and a number of software start-ups.
