We often hear about leadership in many ways. Scholars and academics state their theories about what does it take to be a good leader. Vulnerability, accountability, communication, sacrifice... are concepts we're used to hear about. But only in rare occasions we have a chance to speak with a leader that has "skin in the game", who actually puts all this concepts into practice, often questioning the tradition engrained in the corporate world.

About the Speaker:

Bernard Looney was appointed CEO of BP in February 2020. In this role, Bernard oversaw improvements in both process and personal safety performances and production grew by 20%. There were also significant improvements in both gender and global diversity. Bernard initiated a group-wide dialogue on mental health in hope of ‘ending the stigma’ associated with the issue – a subject he remains passionate about today.

Looney, who has spent his entire career at BP, worked in core production and drilling roles in the North Sea, Vietnam and Mexico, serving in other executive roles before taking over the upstream division in 2016. Has been a member of the company’s executive management team since November 2010.

Looney was born in County Kerry, and was raised on a small dairy farm in Ashgrove. He was the first in his family to attend a university. Looney earned a degree in electrical engineering from University College Dublin and a master's in management from Stanford Graduate School of Business.
