We’re all told to lead purposeful lives, but this seems unrealistic when career success and financial security are also very important. This talk will explain how it’s realistic to lead a life centred around purpose and how doing so can make us more successful, not less. It will also explain how to say No and avoid burnout when you’re constantly receiving requests to help others, and how to practice resilience in the face of adversity, conflict, and failure.

About the Speaker:

Alex Edmans is Professor of Finance at LBS. Alex has a PhD from MIT as a Fulbright Scholar, and was previously a tenured professor at Wharton and an investment banker at Morgan Stanley. Alex has spoken at the World Economic Forum in Davos, testified in the UK Parliament, and given the TED talk “What to Trust in a Post-Truth World” and the TEDx talk “The Social Responsibility of Business” with a combined 2 million views. He serves as Mercers School Memorial Professor of Business at Gresham College, giving a four-year programme of lectures to the public. His 2019-20 series was on “Business Skills for the 21st Century” and covered topics such as time management, mental and physical wellness, the growth mindset, and finding purpose in your career – topics he frequently speaks to companies and investors on.

Alex’s book, “Grow the Pie: How Great Companies Deliver Both Purpose and Profit”, was selected for the Financial Times Business Books of the Year in 2020. At Wharton, Alex won 14 teaching awards in six years. At LBS, he won Best Teacher awards for both the MBA and MFA programmes and the Excellence in Teaching award for best professor across all programmes. He has been named to Poets and Quants Best 40 Professors Under 40 and Thinkers50 Radar.
