by
The MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference is a two-day event that provides a forum for sports industry professionals (executives and leading researchers) and students to discuss the increasing role of analytics in the sports industry. Started in 2007 with the help of Daryl Morey (GM of the
Friday, March 4
The day began with a kickoff panel moderated by acclaimed writer Malcolm Gladwell that discussed ‘Developing the Modern Athlete in 10,000 Hours’. Panelists included Jeff Van Gundy (former NBA coach and current ESPN analyst), Daryl Morey (GM of the Houston Rockets), Mark Verstegen (CEO of Athlete’s Performance), and Justin Tuck (Pro Bowler for the NY Giants). The 90 minute discussion centered on whether superstar athletes are developed or ‘born with it’, what attributes are preferred over others in the ideal athlete, and who the biggest surprises and disappointments are in a talent point of view. Perhaps the most interesting thought to come out of this discussion was the sentiment that coaches and GMs would prefer a ‘great talent’ who was smart / focused / driven over an ‘elite talent’ that was prone to distractions or narcissism, even though statistics show that championship teams absolutely need one or two elite superstars to win.
In the morning I also attended a discussion on ‘Athlete Branding in the New Age’, where Adidas Global Basketball VP Lawrence Norman and Gatorade CMO Sarah Robb O’Hagan talked about measuring the value of a Facebook ‘like’ and Twitter ‘tweet’ for today’s athlete, using NBA Superstar Dwight Howard as the example of the athlete who best uses social media to activate his brand sponsorships. An afternoon session used LeBron James’ decision to publicly announce his move to Miami as a springboard for a discussion on how players and teams will make decisions in the future; this panel discussion included some heavy hitters from the media, agency, and team sides of the business: RC Buford (GM of the San Antonio Spurs), Brian Burke (President of the Toronto Maple Leafs), Mark Bartelstein (CEO of Priority Sports & Entertainment), and Michael Wilbon (ESPN Commentator on Pardon the Interruption).
Throughout the day there were also opportunities to listen in on research paper presentations analyzing various phenomena in the sports world (such as the moral hazard of long-term player contracts), as well as discussion of the latest and greatest analytics and stats in sports such as soccer, golf, and baseball.
Saturday, March 5
The best panel of the weekend came Saturday morning, when owners and executives came together to discuss the new era of sports ownership. The principal owners of the Boston Celtics, Golden State Warriors, and San Diego Padres (Wyc Grousbeck, Joe Lacob, and Jeff Moorad) were joined by ESPN Columnist Bill Simmons, Toronto Maple Leafs President Brian Burke, and Kraft Sports Group VP Jessica Gelman as they discussed the various types of new owners – those that love the team and those who are in it just for the money – and the dynamics of the Owner / GM relationship. Brian Burke stole the show with his candid comments about new owners, the best of which was when he remarked that ‘New owners must have the shortest learning curve in the entire world; two months after buying the team they are already telling me how to do a job I’ve been doing for over 25 years!"
Final Thoughts
The conference was excellent in every respect, from the diversity of discussion topics, to the speakers, to the logistics/execution. Everyone in attendance was very eager to share their experiences with one another, and the panelists were also very down to earth -- I was lucky enough to chat up close and personal with both Kevin Pritchard (former GM of the Portland Trail Blazers) and Mark Cuban (owner of the Dallas Mavericks)! Where else would I get the opportunity to do that?!?
Kudos to co-chairs Evan Wasch and Hana Peljto (Sloan 2011’s) and their entire team for putting on a great weekend.
